Dolphins trade the 3rd overall pick for a haul

It may be a lot sooner than expected, but the move itself comes as no surprise: the Dolphins trade the 3rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Mooted for many weeks now as the Dolphins look to add talent and more picks to their arsenal to support second year QB Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins traded the pick to San Francisco.

The price of the trade was the niners 12th overall pick, a first-round pick in 2022, a first-round pick in 2023, and a third-round pick in 2022. Moving back to 12 was a little bit further than most Dolphins fans were expecting, but what followed was even more surprising as the Dolphins moved back up in the draft.

DOLPHINS TRADE THE 3RD OVERALL PICK

With twitter all-a-buzz with “The Dolphins trade the 3rd Overall pick” news, Miami moved back up to number 6 in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, much mentioned as a potential competitor for offensive weapons gaining the Dolphins 12th-overall pick, their number 123 pick, and the Dolphins 2022 first-round pick. The Eagles also sent the 156th-overall selection to the Dolphins.

So while the main takeaway is still that the Dolphins trade the 3rd overall pick, the move back up to 6 may be the most interesting part of this deal, meaning Miami likely has their eyes on one particular player in this year’s draft class.

Overall, the Dolphins traded the 3rd overall pick for a 2023 first-round pick and a 2022-second round pick.

The move clearly demonstrates the Dolphins overall commitment to last years number 5 overall pick Tua Tagovailoa, ending one of the off-seasons more persistent rumours that Miami was set to trade for Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson.
