The New England Patriots are talking about trading away the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Director of scouting / general manager Eliot Wolf said the Patriots are “open for business”, and “We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft. We’re a draft-and-develop team; the more picks we have, the better.”
Wolf went on to describe the depth of the QB group and how they’re all getting good reviews from teammates and coaches.
“Hearing how impressive they are as teammates, as people, as leaders, I think it’s a unique year. I’d say that’s been impressive with all six of these quarterbacks that are kind of the top guys,” he said.
Patriots are crazy
“When you’re picking this high, fortunately, those teams that are interested are also doing that, so they’ll reach out earlier than they would when we’re on the clock. That makes it easier in this particular situation,” he said, adding that additional trade conversations have taken place with clubs about acquiring a receiver and players at other positions, which is “definitely something we’d be open to.”
While the opportunity to trade down sounds like a good idea, when you’re a team who has Jacoby Brissett as your starter, a rookie head coach in Jerod Mayo, and can’t even work out if your director of scouting is really a GM or just pretending you should probably make the easy decision and select the BEST QB at number 3.
Dropping down and taking Bo Nix, or Michael Penix Jr sounds like a plan, unless somehow comes over the top to take your guy. It’s a crazy plan. Not even a plan, it’s one of those things that will be laughed about on sports radio for decades to come if the Patriots mess this up.
