Seattle Seahawks Preview

For a team that has been to two Superbowls in the last six seasons, 2018 was a massive let down for the Seattle Seahawks. It says something about how far the Seahawks have come that despite once again making the playoffs, and registering a 10-6 record, they were looking to build out their roster with some top talent to try and return to the top table in 2019.

Starting the season with two road games was never going to be easy for the Seattle Seahawks, but they lost both games by less than a score and took some comfort from strong performances.

Their first home game saw an eleven point win over playoff rivals the Cowboys, despite Ezekiel Elliott rushing for 127 yards on just 16 carries. Two interceptions of Dak Prescott proved costly, as the Seahawks showed their strength at home.

However, as the season wore on it became apparent the Seattle Seahawks were really struggling against playoff-bound teams. The Rams knocked them off twice, although only by two points in Los Angeles, and 5 points in Seattle and the Chargers took them down 25-17.

However, there were a number of bright spots for the Seahawks, a 38-31 win over the Chiefs in week 16 showed the team’s potential to put up points. It also highlighted one of their weaknesses as Damien Williams put up 103 yards at an average of 7.9 yards per carry.

Despite ranking just 16th on defense by yards, the Seahawks were again hard to score on, ranking 11th with just 21.7 points per game against.

The offense was much the same, ranking 18th for yards, but 8th for points scored. With a busy offseason filling some holes on both lines and adding a difference-maker in Clowney, expect 2019 to be a better year for the Seattle Seahawks.

Off-Season Acquisitions

Jadaveon Clowney -DE/LB

In one of the biggest trade steals of all-time the Seattle Seahawks acquired three-time Pro Bowler Clowney from the Texans for Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin, and a third-round pick. Clowney immediately upgrades the pass rush for the Seahawks, and also adds an upper-tier run stuffer as well.

Earl Mitchell – DT

Former Texan, Dolphins, and most recently, 49er, Mitchell will add some stoutness to the interior of the defensive line. With 164 tackles in 130 games, the nine-year veteran will also bring leadership to one of the areas of weakness for Seattle in 2018.

Mike Iupati – G

Another weakness for the last few seasons has been the OL, and Iupati will be a major upgrade for this unit. PFF ranked him sixth out of eighty-eight guards in 2018. Struggling with a calf injury at the moment, when he takes the field expect a marked improvement for this unit in 2019

Ezekiel Ansah – DE

Another veteran bought in to strengthen the DL, Ziggy Ansah joins from Detroit where he spent six seasons, starting in 78 games and recording 48 sacks.

Jason Myers – K

Al Woods – DT

Nick Bellore – FB

Cassius Marsh – LB

Deshawn Shead – CB

Geno Smith – QB

Jamar Taylor – CB

Marcus Martin – G

Parry Nickerson – CB
