Broncos HC Sean Payton has said the situation of QB Russell Wilson will come “within the next weeks.”
Having treated his franchise QB disgracefully last season Payton chose the day after Wilson said he would love to stay in Denver to say the owners will decide what to do with him.
Next Tuesday, Wednesday, we’ll be in meetings with ownership, I expect we’re going to know fairly quickly,” Payton said. “I said it at the Super Bowl, but more specifically, somewhere of the neighborhood of next week.”
“There are several factors here,” Payton continued. “The cap projections came out, we’re further down the road with the draft class, obviously the pro free agents, so I would anticipate it within the next two weeks.”
Sean Payton is losing credibility
Of course Sean Payton needs the owners to back him on this because they’re the ones eating the money that he’s throwing in the trash. They’re the ones that have to accept another losing season and then seeing what this ‘great’ head coach can piece together after that.
Because it’s the owners who now have to back their head coach or have a franchise that is even more messed up than the Bears, or the Jets
They have to cut Wilson, because no-one will trade for his contract when they know he’s done in Denver.
It’s no surprise today is the today that Sean Payton played it out. The combine is running, and Russell Wilson went on the “I am Athlete” podcast to discuss his situation.
Wilson said: “I didn’t believe it at first … I got that call ‘Hey, we’re going to bench you for the next nine games if you don’t change your injury guarantee’ … I didn’t want to set a precedent for players with injury guarantees, there was no way I was going to do that … I told them I wasn’t going to do it, no shot.”
Broncos GM George Paton, who has been on board with Sean Paytons plan all along was asked about Wilson’s comments. “I appreciate that, but we’ve moved forward, everything we did was above board,” Paton said. “I appreciate Russ, but we’ve moved forward. We have a lot of work to do, we’re here at the combine, with free agency around the corner, we’re focused on bettering our football team.”
If you need any clearer indication that everyone knows Wilson is getting cut, just hear Paton’s comment on the teams banging on the door to trade for a QB Sean Payton threw under the bus, “I haven’t heard anything from any teams. So, we’ll see.”
That’s because you and your head coach have played this game worse than you do on the field. I for one would take this bet: Russell Wilson will be back in the playoffs before the Broncos.
