Russell Wilson has become a very divisive figure since his massive trade from the Seahawks to the Broncos.
After two failed years in Denver, the Super Bowl winning QB (and Super Bowl runner up) is set to be released by the Broncos, assuming they can’t find a trade partner (which they definitely won’t). So where is Wilson likeliest to land? Let’s rank our top three destinations.
Russell Wilson to the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have been pretty high on most lists for Wilson since his relationship with Sean Payton publicly exploded, but their releasing of Mitchell Trubisky a few days ago hurtles them to the top of our list.
Yes, Mason Rudolph looked serviceable late on in the season, but he’s a free agent leaving only Kenny Pickett as the only QB on the Steelers roster for 2024. Clearly, with Mike Tomlin barely surviving 2023 there’s no way he’s going in to the season without a better option at QB.
This really only leaves the Steelers with two options: Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins. Cousins is the better QB, but he’s almost certainly returning to the Vikings after their horrific experience with anyone not named Kirk Cousins last season.
The Steelers defence is still able to win them games, and keep them in every game. Wilson represents a decent QB, who won’t be asked to do too much except protect the ball and hand the ball off most of the time. Pretty much what he did in Seattle, which resulted in the aforementioned Super Bowl win, and a lifetimes worth of “run the damn ball” memes.
Russell Wilson to the Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are also a great fit for Wilson. Once again a team based around the running game with a strong defence. Like the Steelers they were a QB away from causing teams some major problems in the Super Bowl.
For me the Falcons were the favourites, just, until the Steelers burned down their QB room. Maybe Atlanta will go out and offer Wilson silly money to convince him to come to Georgia. It’s still a good fit, and a great chance for the Falcons to return to the playoffs.
Russell Wilson to the New England Patriots
The more I think on this one, the more I like it. The Patriots can sign Russell Wilson to start and draft LSU QB Jayden Daniels with the third pick in the draft. Daniels gets to sit behind a proven vet and learn what it means to be a pro for a year or two.
It’s worked wonders in the past for Mahomes, Rodgers, Love etc. and could be exactly what the Patriots need. They will likely be pretty competitive if they can hold their defence together under new head coach Jerod Mayo which seems likely.
It’s probably not Wilson’s idea of heaven though being solely a guy to be the filler, but at this point in his career it’s definitely a viable option.
