Just when you thought things were a little quiet at Cowboys camp, Jerry Jones popped up and made Mike McCarthy’s life a whole lot more interesting.
Speaking to NFL Network at training camp on Satuday Jones said, “Zeke’s gotta be our feature, and he is our feature. We can feature him in a lot of different ways … It’s critical that we make Zeke, because he’s capable of being that, really the focus of what we’re doing.”
From a lot of owners this would probably be a reasonably innocuous statement, but coming from Jerry Jones it’s going to make a lot of waves.
JERRY JONES FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER THE COWBOYS
Jerry Jones has been arguably the most hands-on owner the NFL has had over the last thirty years, and this is just the latest little saga. Make no mistake, whether this is Mike McCarthy’s plan or not going into camp, Jones has laid down the decree now that Zeke is the bellcow.
To be fair to Jerry this Cowboys team was assembled to run the ball, and that was one of the reasons Zeke got paid. Now, coming off a couple of years where his carries were down, Jones wants to get back to running the ball down teams throats.
In the modern NFL most teams have veered towards a more passing offence, but this offseason the Cowboys have traded away Amari Cooper, and let Cedrick Wilson walk for a lot of bank. Clearly Jerry Jones is all-in on the running game being the way forward.
It will be fun watching on to see if Mike McCarthy agrees.
