After reaching the AFC Championship game in 2017 there were high expectations going into the 2018 season for the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, things didn’t pan out that way for the boys from Duval, Florida.
The Jags got off to a fast start with a win in New York against the Giants, before hosting the Patriots in a rematch of that Championship game. They got off to a flyer, leading 21-3 at the half before running out with a 31-20 win.
A 6-9 reverse at home to division rivals Tennessee was soon forgotten as the Jags completed a three-game homestand with a win over the Jets. It was then that the wheels came off what was looking like a promising campaign, as the Jacksonville Jaguars would go on a 7-game losing streak.
All told, after the 3-1 start, the Jacksonville Jaguars wound up winning just 2 of their remaining 14 games to end the season on a very disappointing 5-11. It was a massive come down from the AFC Championship game and demanded something change.
With a defense boasting arguably the best cornerback tandem in the league in Jalen Ramsey and AJ Bouye, Miles Jack at LB, and Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue on the line, this was a team that demanded playoff football.
Overall the defense ranked fourth in the NFL averaging just 19.8 pts against per game. The offense meanwhile struggled under the continued leadership of Blake Bortles, scoring just 15.3 ppg, to rank 31st in the league.
A strong push was made for the number one QB in free-agency and Nick Foles duly signed a 4-year $88m contract when free-agency opened. The Jacksonville Jaguars look well placed to make a strong push for the playoffs again in 2019
Jacksonville Jaguars Free Agency
Nick Foles – QB
Having won Superbowl 54, and been MVP, Nick Foles was head and shoulders the premiere QB to hit free agency. Originally it was thought he might be franchise-tagged by the Eagles, but in the end, the Eagles decided to let him leave. Foles has had a somewhat underwhelming career, Superbowl MVP aside, and he will need to improve his consistency if he is to be a long-term success. However, he has landed in the ideal spot to have a huge impact.
