The Jets dysfunction is on show again as the QB no-one wants, including the Jets, is skipping workouts.
QB Zach Wilson, on whom the team wasted the second overall pick in 2021, has decided to skip voluntary workouts as he hopes to force a move away from the team that doesn’t want him.
“I think it’s each player’s choice whether they’re going to be here for Phase 1 [of the program],” general manager Joe Douglas said. “These are all voluntary. There are quite a few players that haven’t come for the first week. So, look, that’s a decision that Zach has to make.”
Jets are giving laughs to a lot of teams
Asked how trade talks that Douglas had previously made up or reported, for Wilson were going, Douglas said: “There’s just no news to report on that. I mean, that’s the trick, right? That’s the magic trick, so to speak, is to try to make sure that Zach’s in a good spot, but also doing what’s right for the New York Jets. So that’s the line we’re walking.”
When you’re calling the possibility of finding a trading partner for Wilson a magic trick, it probably doesn’t help the value you may get in return. Nor did Douglas saying the Jets “didn’t have a backup last season.”
In all seriousness, it’s hard to see a spot where Wilson can get traded to, unless he’s a teams third-string QB who would be expected to just sit and learn and never expected to play. Wilson’s ceiling is still fairly high, but it’s hard to see a scenario where he can manifest that in the NFL.
