Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman was traded to the Buffalo Bills, in return for a late round pick. Supposedly, this is for a 7th round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. This is a very significant trade for two big reasons, outlined below.
Bills get depth at receiver with Corey Coleman
One of the areas where the Bills most suffered was at wide receiver. With Kelvin Benjamin and Zay Jones being their only receivers of note, this was a major area to address in the offseason. GM Brandon Beane made moves for Corey Coleman, a first round pick in 2016, parting with a late round draft pick.
This fills a need for the Bills and gives them a player who is still only 24 years old. Coleman is likely to compete with Zay Jones for No. 2 receiver in the depth chart. Although Coleman has not hit his projected heights, the Bills clearly saw enough in him in order to move for him with this trade.
This may give Coleman the motivation to prove himself. Either way, the Bills seem to have come out on top in this trade as all they parted with was a late round pick while obtaining a former first round pick in Corey Coleman. Receiver Quan Bray was waived in order to make room for Coleman.
Browns make room on their roster
The Browns traded away a player who had not produced what was required of him in the two years since they drafted him at 15th overall in the 2016 Draft. With Jarvis Landry as their primary receiver, the Browns may have thought there was too much similar talent on the roster in order to keep Coleman.
One possibility of trading Coleman was to free up room on the roster for a high profile signing. A player who has been linked to the Browns a lot lately is former Cowboys star Dez Bryant. Since being released by the Cowboys in April, Bryant has been linked to a number of organisations.
One team which may be willing to give him the one year contract he desires is the Cleveland Browns. Trading Coleman for a 7th round pick frees up space on their roster, allowing the Browns to make a move for Dez Bryant. If the Browns get rid of Coleman in favour of Bryant, Browns fans are unlikely to be upset with GM John Dorsey over the way this trade unfolded.
