DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary catch stuns Bills

It wasn’t supposed to end like that. At least if you’re a Bills fan. DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary catch with just two seconds left stunned the favourite Buffalo Bills and handed the Cardinals an improbable victory.

Watch DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary as it happened

It was a game the Bills seemed to have in control with a 23-9 lead five-minutes into the second half. But after a great start to the year Josh Allen once again showed signs of not being able to maintain the same level of consistency throughout a season with two second half interceptions.

One of those interceptions allowed the Cardinals to take the lead at 26-23. The second would prove to trigger one of the most exciting five minute spells in the NFL this season.

With just 4:31 to go, the Cardinals had the ball on their own 41-yard-line with a 26-23 lead. Surely now Kyler Murray would ice the game and the Cardinals would claim their biggest scalp of the season?

Not to be, as Murray could only manage 2 incompletions and a six yard sack, burning just 56 seconds from the clock.

Josh Allen would then show the improvements that have been evident this season as he drove the Bills for the go ahead score, driving 78 yards in 12 plays culmination in Allen’s 21-yard scoring toss to Stefon Diggs. It was a masterful drive, leaving the Cards needing a TD with only 39 seconds to play.

DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary catch stuns Bills

And so it fell to Kyler Murray to produce a miracle…and that’s really the only way to describe DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary catch. After completions of 14, 9, and 9, Murray had move the Cards to the Bills 43-yard-line with 11 seconds remaining.

Under a lot of pressure Murray managed to give Hopkins enough time to get down the field and produce one of the best catches of the season. Surrounded by three Bills defenders Hopkins somehow elevated to make the ball his own.

While DeAndre Hopkins Hail Mary catch will go down in Cardinals folklore, the Bills have to question how they allowed the play to happen. Defenders were playing the field all the way to the goal line despite the fact the Cardinals couldn’t settle for a field goal. With only 11 seconds left they had to go end zone, so the spacing they used was truly bizarre.

But that decision gave us one of the truly memorable moments of 2020 so far.
