The New Orleans Saints have begun their annual game of get under the cap by restructuring starting QB Derek Carr’s contract.
Carr was due $30-million in base salary in 2024 but has converted a chunk into signing bonus creating $23-million in cap relief for the Saints. It seems every season New Orleans has to play the same games just to get under the cap.
Saints still in cap hell
Even after this move, and the $30-million increase in the NFL’s salary cap the Saints find themselves still roughly $23-million over the cap. For a team that finished the 2023 season 9-8 and outside the playoffs it’s less than ideal.
Carr threw for 3,878 yards and 25 scores in his first season in New Orleans under second-year head coach Dennis Allen. It was maybe not the performance level that many expected from Carr, but it was a massive step up from what they put on the field without him.
“He’s done a good job of protecting the football for the most part, and that’s the No. 1 stat in football, is the turnover-takeaway ratio,” Allen said in what many considered feint praise.
