Patriots rookie head coach Jerod Mayo is trying to roll back on the excessive amounts of hope on Drake Maye being the next Tom Brady as the team prepares for the 2024 season.
“He has a lot to work on. A lot to work on,” Mayo said. “But I have no doubt that he will put the time in. He was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else.”
Mayo acknowledge that the success of Maye will largely dictate the evaluation of his success as head coach, and Eliot Wolf‘s success as GM/EVP. Developing Maye makes sense for the Patriots, but with Jacoby Brissett as their starting QB the pressure to play the rookie QB will likely come early in the season.
Patriots may need Maye to be good this season
Unsurprisingly, Drake Maye has been largely upbeat about his first experiences on the field training with the Patriots. “It’s been good, kind of the first day feeling it out and just getting more and more reps,” Maye said. “That’s all something new takes — getting more reps at it. I felt pretty good out there today, so just have to keep working.”
However, Maye’s teammates are happy to hype him up and build up that confidence. “The guy can sling it, man,” rookie WR Ja’Lynn Polk said. “He’s very confident. He’s a leader, very vocal; he’s setting the tone in practice, trying to get guys moving around and operating at a high level.”
