The Patriots have a new head coach, a new plan, and come the draft a brand new quality QB. Incumbent Mac Jones is being shipped to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick.
New head coach Jarod Mayo has clearly set his heart on one of the new crop of QB’s with the Patriots 3rd overall selection. This is most likely to be Drake Maye, although if all the chips were to fall perfectly it could perhaps be Jayden Daniels (though unlikely).
Patriots QB struggles not all Mac Jones
While there can be little doubt Mac Jones has struggled the last couple of seasons, not all of those issues were his. There was a serious lack of talent at the WR position, particularly after the loss of Jacob Meyers.
But Jones completion percentage dropped each season, and his TWP% more than doubled in 2023 to 5.8% (per PFF.com). It’s a chance to remake himself for the former 15th-overall selection out of Alabama.
Jones isn’t alone in his struggles as part of teh class of 21, with Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields all being flops to one degree or another. Jones will get a chance to win the backup job for the only successful QB in the class, Trevor Lawrence.
