Less than twenty-four hours after passing on Justin Fields in the first round of the NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers exercised Sam Darnold’s fifth-year option. The move extends Darnold’s contract until the end of the 2022 season and fully guarantee’s his $18.9 million dollars for the fifth season.
Originally a third overall selection of the New York Jets Darnold has passed for 8,097 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions during his NFL career. In his two-years as a starter at USC he racked up 7,221 yards, 57 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.

The move comes as a small gamble with the $18.9 million being fully guaranteed but the Panthers are all-on on Darnold after passing on a QB in the first round on Thursday night. The Panthers will be hoping a change of scenery, a better offensive line, and a better supporting cast will allow him to finally unleash the potential that made him the number 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
