The Green Bay Packers are swapping out running backs, dumping Aaron Jones and bringing in former Las Vegas Raider stud Josh Jacobs.
It’s an interesting move for the Packers as the importance of Jones late in the season wasn’t lost on anyone. “He certainly had an impact on the game and an impact on our offense, an impact on our team with our late-season push,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said at the end of season. “I don’t know if we do all that without him. That’s all part of the process.”
Packers being proactive
But the Packers have to be more realistic, and Jones missed a lot of time in the 2023 season. GM Brian Gutekunst summed this up succinctly, “He was such a difference-maker when he was out there this year. The way our offense was able to move. The way he changed a lot of the way we operated when he was in there and when he was healthy.”
“I think for us, it’s finding a way to keep him out there and keep him healthy. Not only on the field but, and you guys know this, you guys have been around here, he’s such an influential leader in our locker room. He’s just really the heartbeat of our team. That’s certainly the anticipation, that he’ll be back.”
Jacobs had his least productive season as a Raider gaining 805 yards and 6 touchdowns at 3.5 per carry. But the Raiders line was bad, and their offense was much worse. His style is very similar to that of Jones, so the Packers are banking on Jacobs being the stud he was in his previous seasons.
