Baker Mayfield has a new toy in Carolina after the Panther acquired WR Laviska Shenault Jr from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a 2023 seventh-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round-pick.
Shenault, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, was the Jaguars second leading receiver in 2022 with63 catches for 619 yards but failed to score a TD. He was racked with inconsistencies, however, dropping 10 passes.
In college Laviska Shenault Jr amassed 1,951 yards and 10 touchdowns on 15o catches in his his three years with the Colorado Buffaloes.
LAVISKA SHENAULT JR GETS A FRESH START
Panthers OC Ben McAdoo has somewhat of a history with Laviska Shenault Jr having been the Jaguars QB coach in 2020 when he was drafted. Shenault put up 600 yards on 58 catches with 5 touchdowns in his rookie season.
A big-bodied possession receiver more than a dynamic play-maker, Shenault Jr comes into a relatively settled Panthers WR room, but adds good depth with the potential to move up the depth chart if injuries and inconsistencies continue to plague the other receivers.
DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson are locks for the WR1 and WR2 spot, and while Terrace Marshall Jr is a highly explosive and exciting talent at WR3 he has had considerable difficulty staying healthy enough to see the field.
Initially Shenault Jr will likely compete with Shi Smith for the WR4 spot, although Smith himself has struggled for consistency making just 6 catches for 104 yards in his rookie campaign in 2021.
