Dolphins claim Trill Williams, but who is ‘Trill The Thrill’?

News broke late yesterday that the Dolphins had made another move claiming Trill Williams off the waiver wire from New Orleans. The Saints had waived the new signed UDFA with a failed physical designation but were all prepared to resign him before Miami swooped in to claim him.

Trill Willams is an interesting player if you trawl through all of the draft analysis websites. Draft Network, for example, had Williams as high as 82nd on their big board and slapped a third-round grade on him. Others were less enamoured, with Si Clancy of Gridiron Magazine and Three yards per carry podcast ranking him as the 36th rated corner in the class.

TRILL WILLIAMS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE FLORES HYBRID

However, the real intrigue with Trill Williams comes when we throw Draft Bible into the mix. They ranked Willismas as the 8th best free safety in the class.

“Blessed with an outstanding frame, with length for days, Williams is a very easy player to spot on the back end. Lining up mostly in the nickel in 2019, Williams made the move to free safety full time last season. He brings a physical brand of football, never shying away from contact. Williams is an explosive mover who is a height/weight/speed specimen that position coaches are going to get excited about on the next level. He plays angry, putting some massive shots in the pass game on film”, per draft bible.

So with Williams being a project player who moved from nickel int 2019 to free safety in 2020 he is ideally suited to coach Flores big nickel and has the potential to become a stellar player as another hybrid on the back end of the defence.

Now don’t get too excited just yet as Trill Williams has an extensive injury history which seems to be the main reason that he has dropped down the draft boards of every team in the league to the point he became a UDFA in the first place.

Over his three years at Syracuse Trill Williams allowed a QB rating of 79.1, just 4 touchdowns on 92 targets and took 4 interceptions and made 6 pass breakups. When you consider that four of those pass breakups came in 2020 when he lined up as a safety you can see why coach Flores likes this kid.

It remains to be seen whether Williams can develop into a regular down NFL player but he has the exact kind of profile this regime looks for and has further strengthened what looks to be a great 2021 Draft class.
