After a long drawn out saga the Cowboys have completed the long-term Dak Prescott deal that everyone has been craving. We can finally put this behind us and begin looking to free agency and the draft with renewed hope, and yes, renewed expectation.
For while 2020 was an unmitigated disaster on pretty much every level, 2021 has the promise of a more potent offense, a more cohesive offense, and another NFC East division title. Dak’s 4-year $160-million(ish) deal has set the wheels in motion on the Cowboys return to dominance that was expected to be the highlight of 2020.
DAK PRESCOTT DEAL MAKES BOYS TOP DOGS
With Dak on the books for at least the next four years the NFC East suddenly has a powerhouse again.
Sure the Redskins have a good defense, but the removal of Alex Smith, and Dwayne Haskins, takes away their solid QB, and the heir-apparent they thought they had. Yes they have a boat load of cap space, but that’s not going to get you that far without a guy throwing the rock.
The Giants seem unable to see the flaws in Daniel Jones game, and continue trying to solidify the line in front of him instead of adding weapons to see what he really has, which doesn’t seem much.
And the Eagles have just jettisoned former MVP-elect Carson Wentz to turn the ball over to Jalen Hurts who completed just 52% of his passes on his way to 1-3. Oh, and they’re still $25-million over the cap for 2021.
Let’s not forget, that even without Dak this team came within a whisker of making the playoffs thanks to the incompetence of the teams around them. In five games at the start of the season Dak’s Cowboys put up 30+ points in four of them. A figure they only matched in the remaining eleven games.
DAK PRESCOTT DEAL WILL HELP THE CAP
We can debate forever whether the Dallas Cowboys would’ve actually kept Prescott if no long-term deal had been worked out. The cap hit would’ve been horrendous to deal with in the post-covid salary-cap year, but it would’ve been workable.
But with the Dak Prescott deal done it will free up some valuable cap space to strengthen that defense that showed major cracks last season. Despite playing in one of the most offensively starved divisions in football, the Cowboys had the 28th ranked scoring defence.
With Prescott signed long-term his cap hit will be $15m-$20m lower than if he’d played under the franchise tag. With the offense largely intact from last season, the focus can now shift on strengthening the defense and moving the Cowboys into a genuine playoff contender.
And finally, we can move onto other news than talking about why, when, and maybe even if, the Cowboys were really committed to Dak. That boat has sailed, and we finally have a long-term Dak Prescott deal.
