Could Broncos stun, trade up for 4th pick?

The Denver Broncos have been tipped to trade up in one of the newest mock drafts out there by analyst Chris Trapasso and select QB JJ McCarthy.

It’s an intriguing option, and one that makes sense. As much as we here at TSD have lambasted head coach Sean Payton for his appalling handling of the Russell Wilson situation, it makes little sense for him to move into the 2024 season without selecting a QB in this years draft.

Do the Broncos really need to move up?

But the question was always would they move up and could they. Now a jump to the Cardinals number 4 pick makes sense, it stops either of the other two notably QB needy teams from coming over the top and allows Denver the pick of who is their favourite.

Were they to stay at 12 they could likely draft Michael Penix Jr, but there’s doubts that he really suits Payton’s scheme. The reason I jumped straight for Penix? Well that’s because the Vikings are the most QB needy team out there and are 100% moving into he top 10 to take a QB if the Broncos do not make a move.

Could the Vikings head into 2024 with Sam Darnold at QB? It seems even less likely than Denver heading in with Jarrett Stidham, but it is plausible. But you’d have to be a very secure head coach to try that and while Kevin O’Connell is pretty safe this would be one heck of a gamble.

Could this really be the rehabilitation of Sean Payton as the Broncos head coach. Could this be the point where some of the craziness makes sense. Only time will tell.
