The Kansas City Chiefs won their second-straight Super Bowl with a 25-22 OT win over the San Francisco 49ers.
It was a slow boil for the first half as the 49ers built a 10-3 half time lead, although they probably should’ve had a bigger lead.
Chiefs overcome 10-point deficit…again!
The 49ers entered the second half with a 7-point lead, and were the best team in the first half by a much larger margin. But for their third Super Bowl in a row the Chiefs overturned a 10-point deficit to win.
“When you go against guys like Tom Brady and Pat Mahomes, you never feel comfortable with a lead. Those guys are two of the best to ever play the game,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
The biggest decision of the game came in OT and will be analysed to a death over the next few days. With the 49ers winning the toss to start OT, and both teams guaranteed to have a possession should they take the ball or kick.
The 49ers took the ball, settled for a FG and gave Patrick Mahomes a chance to win the game. It was a chance Mahomes didn’t waste.
The Chiefs have now officially entered the ‘dynasty’ phase, and with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid at the top of the organisation it’s hard to bet against them being back again next year.
After a season in which they seemed disjointed, even beatable at times, they came together for a playoff run that saw them win the last three games as underdogs. If the Chiefs have shown us anything it’s that Patrick Mahomes should probably never be an underdog in a game again.
“With all the adversity we’ve been through this season to come through tonight. … I’m proud of the guys,” said Mahomes, who earned his third Super Bowl MVP award. “This is awesome. Legendary.”
“I am going to celebrate tonight, celebrate at the parade and then work my way to get back in this game next year,” Mahomes said. “I am going to do whatever I can to be back in this game next year. Three-peat.”
