Chargers fire Brandon Staley after 63-21 loss

The Chargers have suffered a humiliating season given their expectations to challenge the Chiefs for the AFC West coming in to the season. And now head coach Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco have paid the price with their jobs owner Dean Spanos announced.

CHARGERS LOOKING TO BUILD IN 2024

“These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly — especially when you consider the number of people they impact,” Spanos said. “We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take. Our fans have stood strong through so many ups and downs and close games. They deserve more. Frankly, they’ve earned more.”

With QB Justin Herbert already in place you’d imagine the Chargers job will be one of the hotly prized jobs in the 2024 market.

Los Angeles were 24-24 under Staley with one playoff appearance that ended when the Jaguars overturned a 27-point deficit to stun the Chargers last season. This season has been a disaster from the off with the team never having a winning record.

The firings come hot on the heels of the Chargers thrashing at the hands of the Raiders, and Staley’s understatement of the year. “We just didn’t have a good game tonight,” Staley said. “We didn’t have it from the beginning to the end. It’s just one of those games where nothing went right for us. We got a good group of guys, but it was just one of those games where all three phases, the worst thing happened to us tonight. It’s a reflection of all of us.”

As hard as it was to imagine him surviving after that game saying “We just didn’t have a good game” must have infuriated the owner more than anything else. The Chargers were horrific. And now they will be looking for Herbert’s third head coach in his short time in the NFL.
