The Denver Broncos have officially announced they will be cutting Russell Wilson after finding no takers for a QB they had already dumped in everyone else’s eyes.
The two-year stay for Wilson in Denver was not successful, and while Broncos head coach Sean Payton clearly didn’t want Wilson, the way the whole saga was handled will handcuff the Broncos for a while and leaves them with a massive question mark at QB.
Broncos take largest hit in NFL history
Denver will take a staggering $85-m cap. hit by cutting Wilson. The hit is not only the largest in NFL history, it is larger than the second and third biggest cap hits combined. Matt Ryan left the Falcons with a cap hit off $40.5-m and Aaron Rodgers left the Packers with a $40.5-m hit.
While the Packers had Jordan Love lead them to a playoff berth after taking the Rodgers hit, the Broncos will have Jarrett Stidham leading them in 2024 barring something bizarre happening.
Stidham started two games for Denver in 2023 completing 60.6% of his passes for 496 yards 2 scores and a pick and going 1-1. Denver is Stidham’s third team in his four years in the league and he has 8 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
