Seahawks acquire intriguing Howell for 3rd

The Seattle Seahawks have acquired Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell, a 4th and 6th, for a 3rd, and a fifth.

It’s a steal for Seattle who were left wondering what to do about the QB situation, seemingly out of the pointy end of free-agency QB’s and the draft, but still looking for an upgrade.

Did the Seahawks get a steal?

It’s really not much to give up for a QB that has shown flashes of high-level play in his two years in the league, passing for 3,945 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2023 with the Commanders.

Howell’s biggest problem last season was his 21 interceptions and tendency to trust his arm just a little too-much. Washington also had the habit of getting behind in games and going with a very unbalanced offence allowing defences to key on the pass

Seahawks GM John Schneider said Seattle are looking at Howell as a backup to Smith, but it will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

“He had a great day against us this past fall,” Schneider told Seattle Sports 710-AM. “He’s a quarterback but he’s really a football player. That’s what I love about him. Really tough, young. He’s 23 years old and has 18 starts in the league already. He’s the same age as like Daniels from LSU and Rattler and Penix, and he’s a year younger than Bo Nix.

“We were just really excited to be able to acquire him. We know he’s a serious dude. He’s into it, he works his tail off. We got great reviews on him and we loved him coming out of college. So yeah, we’re happy to get him in the mix. Geno’s the guy and Sam will be backing him up.”

It remains to be seen how long the Seahawks stick with that plan.
