Panthers acquire Sam Darnold for 3 draft picks

The Carolina Panthers have traded for New York Jets starting Quarterback Sam Darnold sending a 6th rounder in 2021 and second and fourth rounders in 2022 in return. Darnold was selected 3rd overall by the Jets in the QB stacked draft of 2018.

Despite show signs of growth early in his second season, Sam Darnold failed to ever fully ingrain himself into the hearts of NY Jets fans.

PANTHERS BANK ON SAM DARNOLD BECOMING A FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK

Scott Fitterer and Matt ruhle will feel that this is a major coup, believing Sam Darnold can become the franchise quarterback the team has been looking for since parting ways with Cam Newton last season. The Panthers were expected to either select their next QB with the 8th overall selection in the upcoming draft, or trade up for one.

The Panthers clearly believe a change of scenery, better coaching, and surrounding Darnold with more talent will allow the QB to elevate himself to the level that was expected when he was drafted out of USC.

With Darnold now on the team the front office can look to address needs either along the offensive line or by taking one of the premier weapons available in the draft such as Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith.

In his time in New York Sam Darnold went 13-25, completing 59.8% of his passes for 8,097 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions.

Darnold has 1-year remaining on his rookie deal, with the Panthers having the right to exercise the fifth-year option in his rookie deal that would see Darnold earn $18-million in 2022 fully guaranteed.
