New Orleans Saints signing Jameis Winston

Former first overall pick and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Jameis Winston is signing a one year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

While the details of the deal are yet to be announced, Yahoo Sports report that Winston’s salary is expected to be “economical” to fit inside the Saints’ already tight salary cap.

In his initial one-year deal with the Saints, Winston will likely be competing with the human Swiss army knife that is Taysom Hill to prove he is the guy to take over from Drew Brees.

The future Hall of Fame-er Brees is expected to retire at the end of this season to take up an analyst position with NBC Sports.

Last season, Winston had quite a remarkable season. He threw 33 touchdowns throughout the season, but countered that by also throwing 30 interceptions.

Only Lamar Jackson threw more touchdown passes than Winston in 2019, but he won the unwanted award for most interceptions by a country mile. Second place was Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield, who threw 21.

Meanwhile, Taysom Hill played pretty much everywhere on the field in 2019. He only managed six passing attempts throughout the year though, connecting on half of them for a total of 55 yards.

As well as those two, the Saints also have newly-acquired Tommy Stevens to contend with. The seventh round 2020 draft pick has been compared to Taysom Hill for his versatile nature.

While snaps will be limited for Winston in 2020, he’ll have to prove to Sean Payton that he is the man to take the Saints forward post-Brees.

Brees showed little sign of slowing down in 2019 and was the most accurate QB in the entire league, connecting on 74.3% of his 378 passing attempts.

Now though, as the 41-year-old’s career winds down, focus in New Orleans turns to the future. Is Winston the man to replace a legend? Only time will tell.
