Emmanuel Sanders signs $16 million deal with New Orleans Saints

Emmanuel Sanders has signed a two-year $16 million deal with the New Orleans Saints after reportedly passing on the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers.

The Super Bowl runner up is on his way to his third team in two years after playing for the Broncos and 49ers last season

In his prime, Emmanuel Sanders was one of the best receivers in the NFL and put up 101 catches and 1,404 yards with nine touchdowns in 2014.

Then the following year, Sanders tallied 1,135 receiving yards with six touchdowns on his way to Super Bowl 50 before putting up 1,032 yards and five touchdowns in 2016.

While his best years may be behind him, the 33-year-old put up respectable numbers last season with 66 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns and helped San Francisco to a Super Bowl berth.

The veteran receiver, who already has a ring, will provide a much-needed second wideout option for the Saints alongside Michael Thomas.

With Drew Brees signing on to return, this missing piece drastically improves the Saints’ already threatening aerial attack.

The signing also adds considerable playoff experience to a team who has suffered multiple disappointing post-season exits in recent years.

Where does Emmanuel Sanders’ departure leave 49ers?

The team will have wanted Sanders back but, with limited cap space available, were likely unable to offer him the money he deserves.

As well as putting up decent numbers, Sanders brought options to the offence by freeing up team mates Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle and he will leave a hole that needs filling this off-season.

After losing their top wide receiver, the 49ers will undoubtedly be looking to draft some fresh talent from what is a deep draft class at that position.

Deebo Samuel will also be expected to step up and should be able to build on what was a respectable rookie year, after putting up 802 yards from 57 receptions with three touchdowns.
