The Green Bay Packers free agency could prove to be a pivotal moment in the franchise’s development after an impressive 2019 season.
The Packers silenced doubters by making it all the way to the NFC Championship game with few high-profile receiving threats aside from Davante Adams and an underrated running back in the form of Aaron Jones.
So what better way to build on what should be considered a successful maiden season for head coach Matt LaFleur than to add some serious weapons for Aaron Rodgers to throw to?
If Jones can keep up his productivity on the ground, an additional aerial threat could see the Packers go all the way come next season.
The wide receiver options in this year’s draft are set to be some of the best in recent memory, but adding an experienced and established player could also be a wise move for the Pack come March 18.
Here’s some wide receiver free agents the Green Bay Packers could consider…
Amari Cooper – Dallas Cowboys
Ok so this is probably unlikely given the hefty price tag Amari Cooper is likely to attract but the star receiver would be a dream signing for the Green Bay Packers should they be able to make it work.
The 25-year-old had an impressive 2019 season with 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and 8 touchdowns.
With Cowboys QB Dak Prescott also hitting free agency, it’s unlikely Cooper will get the franchise tag from Dallas so he should be up for grabs next week when the new season kicks off.
Cooper would be a perfect addition alongside Davante Adams and the pair would likely make one of the most formidable tandem receiving corps in the league.
Emmanuel Sanders – San Francisco 49ers
Emmanuel Sanders, who turns 33 next week, proved he can still be a productive receiving talent for any franchise after a successful stint with both the Denver Broncos and 49ers last season.
Having the unique distinction of playing 17 games, Sanders had a combined 66 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns which could make him a sensible choice for the Green Bay Packers free agency decisions.
Despite being one of the oldest receivers up for grabs this off-season, Sanders still looks competitive on the field and could prove an effective short-term solution to the Packers’ lack of receiving threats next season.
Randall Cobb – Dallas Cowboys
If the Green Bay Packers free agency doesn’t see them pick up Amari Cooper from Dallas, another cheaper option could be former Packer Randall Cobb.
While the 29-year-old only managed 383 yards from 38 receptions with the Packers in 2018, he proved to be far more valuable to Dallas last season.
The second-round draft pick who is heading into his third season put up 828 yards from 55 receptions and scored three touchdowns for the Cowboys last season showing he could be poised for a breakout year.
With experience catching throws from Aaron Rodgers already under his belt, maybe it’s time for Cobb to return to the fold.
Phillip Dorsett – New England Patriots
While Phillip Dorsett’s stats for 2019 are not mind-blowing, a quick glance at his highlight reel shows the 27-year-old was able to make some game-changing plays for the Patriots last season.
Dorsett is low down on the Patriots’ depth chart for wide receiver and has been behind star targets including Antonio Brown, Josh Gorden and Mohammed Sanu last season so it’s not entirely surprising he didn’t have the most targets.
But across his 29 receptions, he had an average of 13.7 yards and wracked up a career-high five touchdowns.
Dorsett signed a $2.5 million one-year deal with the Patriots last year and, if he signs a similar deal this year, he could prove good value for the Packers.
Breshad Perriman – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Similar to Phillip Dorsett, the stats for Breshad Perriman do not really do him justice but he had some breakout performances in the second half of the season.
This was largely due to injuries to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in the last three games of the season when Perriman was forced to step up.
He ended the 2019 season with 36 receptions for 645 yards and six touchdowns. He also posted an impressive 17.9 yards per catch – the fourth highest in the NFL.
But in his final three games, with no Evans or Godwin, he made 17 catches for 349 yards and four touchdowns.
He could prove a risky sign for a Green Bay Packers free agency choice but he could pay huge dividends if he is given a more prominent role in a team’s offense.
