The Indianapolis Colts were not supposed to be top of the AFC South. They certainly weren’t supposed to have a winning record after facing the Jaguars and Ravens in two of their first three games.
But new HC Shane Steichen has them playing winning football by sticking in games and making plays when they are needed. It’s not been pretty but it has been effective…somehow.
MINSHEW MANIA LIFTS THE COLTS
A lot of the praise for the Colts start to the season has to fall on OC Jim Bob Cooter. Before the season started he found out he wouldn’t have his number 1 running back, a situation that seems likely to drag on most of the season until the trade deadline at least. In week two having unleashed rookie QB Anthony Richardson for two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, he lost the rookie to a concussion that kept him.
No problem, Cooter changed his play calls to suit veteran noise maker Gardner Minshew and topped the Ravens 22-19. It wasn’t pretty, or without controversy, but Indianapolis don’t care one bit. They’re sitting pretty atop the division they were hotly tipped to be battling for last place in.
