Liverpool extend Klopp while looking to his successor

With Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, the board are already planning ahead for Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield. After years of mismanagement and appalling choices for the manger’s role, Liverpool are leaving nothing to chance once Klopp hangs up his whistle.

Four and half years into his tenure as manager, Jurgen Klopp has extended his contract to the end of the 2024 season. It’s only a two year add on to the contract Klopp already had, and he has had some fans questioning the serendipity of another recently announced contract.

Liverpool on the verge

Across the border in Scotland, Reds legend, and former England midfielder, Steven Gerard has also signed a contract extension with Rangers that will keep him in Glasgow until the summer of 2024.

Previously linked with big-money moves to Real Madrid and PSG, Klopp is now tied down at Anfield, in a deal that would take his tenure to nine years if he sees the contract out. At this point in time, with Liverpool eight points clear of Leicester City, and 14 points clear of title contenders Manchester City, there is no reason to think Klopp will be leaving any time soon.

Coincidentally, Gerrard’s new deal is also a 2-year extension after the two managers’ contracts were already synced to end in 2022. Gerrard has greatly improved the fortunes of Rangers since taking the helm in May 2018, and they currently sit just two points off Celtic.

While Gerrard has certainly improved the overall performance of Rangers, his poor results against Celtic will still be a slight concern. In his 6 games against the old-firm rivals, Rangers have won just twice, losing the other four games.

While there’s a long way to go, and a lot still to prove for Gerrard, a reunion under the Anfield floodlights would likely be one the fans would relish.
