Why haven’t Newcastle United secured new contract for ace Matty Longstaff?

Newcastle United’s 19-year-old midfielder Matty Longstaff is out of contract this summer, and talks seem to have come to some sort of impasse.

The youngster has made a real impact on the team this year – including marking his full debut with the winning goal against Manchester United at the Gallowgate End of St James’ Park.

The season so far for Longstaff and Newcastle

As mentioned above, Matty made his debut for Newcastle against Manchester United back in October – although his first outing in a black & white jersey came a week prior, in a 5-0 thrashing away at Leicester.

Against Man United, he lined up in the middle of the park alongside his brother and former Manchester United target, Sean Longstaff. The pair dominated the middle of the field all game long, and Matty marked his special day by bagging the winner in the 72nd minute.

In total, he’s made 11 appearances this term – seven in the Premier League, three in the FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup. In those games, he’s put in some cracking performances in the centre of the park, and scored three goals doing so.

Obviously we know his first goal, but interestingly, the second goal also came against Man United, in the return fixture at Old Trafford on Boxing Day – although Newcastle lost the game. His latest goal came in the FA Cup third round replay against Rochdale at St James’ Park last month.

He put in another cracking performance alongside brother Sean on Tuesday against Oxford in the FA Cup – a game Newcastle eventually came through to reach the fifth round for the first time in Mike Ashley’s reign of tyranny.

GET HIM SIGNED UP!

As far as I’m concerned, the fact Newcastle haven’t just given this kid whatever he wants is beyond me. He’s a Geordie lad so it won’t be too hard to convince him to stick around, so what’s the hold up? Alan Shearer says they just need to get it done:

“Absolutely not [can they afford to let him go]

“It’s his 11th start this evening, 6th in the Premier League so in terms of starting games there’s not been that many but in terms of ability he’s shown enough in that short time to show that Newcastle should really do everything they can, especially with him being a local lad – we know how much that means to the fans – to keep hold of him.

“Contracts are always going to be difficult, we know what agents can be like but I really, really hope Newcastle can sign him up.”

I couldn’t have said it any better myself Big Al!

To add to the worries, brother Sean is also struggling to come to terms for a new contract too – although he has until June 2022 before his will run out. Steve Bruce seems as worried about the situation as any of us…

“It’s a concern for us all, of course it is. I hope we can get that tied up, I really do. But, they’ve got the power these days, the players. We see it often now with young players as well. I hope there’s a bit of common sense.

“There’s nobody, at 19, played more games than him. He’s got an opportunity. Look, we always want to keep your best young players, especially if they’re Geordies, of course.

“Let’s hope they both get tied up.”

Although I may not go as far as tying them up (…kinky), I do agree with Steve Bruce! It’s of paramount importance NUFC lock down the futures of the Longstaff brothers, especially with the likes of Man United sniffing around Sean and the MILAN (I know…) teams looking at Matty.

Therefore my message to Mike Ashley, Lee Charnley or whatever buffoon is in charge of contract negotiations is this:

“Pull your head out of your rear end and get it sorted ASAP! Then sell to the Suadi’s while you’re there…”
