Lazy Fan Sports have learned that Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho wanted to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic with Robert Lewandowski. However, the United boss thinks Romelu Lukaku’s form is good enough for him to continue as starting striker.
Lewandowski future
This news surfaces following the revelation from Robert Lewandoski that he wishes to leave the Allianz Arena this summer. He has spent the last four seasons in Bavaria, winning the Bundesliga in all of them. However, he has decided to move on, and as expected, there were more than a few teams interested.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are just three of the clubs linked with the Polish superstar. Lewandowski’s former team Borussia Dortmund are the latest to enter the fray. Their director claims he “would pay €100million” for the club’s former talisman. Despite all of the interest, at the moment it looks almost certain that Lewandowski will remain in Munich for the coming season.
Lukaku Form
Lukaku signed for the Red Devils last Summer in a deal worth around £75million. He notched 16 goals in 33 appearances in the Premier League as well as five goals in the FA Cup and another five in the Champions League.
Lukaku lead the line for Belgium at the World Cup this summer, the side who would eventually claim the bronze medal. During the tournament, he scored four goals and proved himself very useful in more than one role.
The Belgian side demonstrated their ability to counter-attack on more than a few occasions, with Lukaku at the centre of it all. This is perhaps an avenue Mourinho may look to explore this season. The Belgian looked deadly throughout, although he did miss a few key chances in the third place play-off.
His World Cup form, coupled with his Manchester United form is enough for Lukaku to retain his place as United’s starting striker. So Jose will not be looking to purchase any strikers this Summer.
Mourinho has already added Brazilian midfielder Fred, Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot and veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant to his squad this summer. It’s also being reported today that the club are looking to bring in England World Cup hero Harry Maguire. Sky Sports are reporting that United value the defender at £65million, but the clubs remain some way apart.
