Tottenham plotting surprise move for Leicester forward

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in moving for on-loan Leicester City striker Islam Slimani, according to the Telegraph. The 31-year-old Algerian striker is currently playing on loan at Monaco having fallen out of favour at the King Power.

This season, Slimani has made 14 appearances for Monaco in all competitions over the English Channel, scoring seven goals and assisting seven more. Despite not being anywhere near the quality of striker Spurs have become accustomed to in Harry Kane, Slimani could certainly do a job if needed.

His most recent spell in the Premier League came in a rather uninspiring loan spell at Newcastle towards the back end of the 2017/18 season. He managed only one assist and no goals in just four appearances for Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side.

Tottenham in for Slimani?

Slimani fits the profile of the kind of striker Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho is trying to bring in with his large stature and physical presence. Last season, Tottenham had Fernano Llorente to call on whenever Harry Kane was absent, and if the move were to happen they’d be hopeful Slimani could do a similar job.

Mourinho’s Tottenham side like to have a presence in the box and while Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min are both outstanding footballers, neither can provide that. As well as Slimani, Tottenham have been linked with the likes of Krzysztof PiÄ…tek of AC Milan as well as Crystal Palace striker, Christian Benteke.

It seems clear they’re only looking towards temporary place-fillers for Kane and as such, Tottenham fans may have to accept a lower standard of player. For me, Slimani has all the attributes necessary to do a passable job in a Mourinho system – so I wouldn’t be too adverse to that move if I were a Spurs fan.
