According to the papers this morning, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a shock move for Chelsea winger, Willian. The Brazilian famously snubbed Tottenham in favour of their London rivals back in 2013, but is out of contract with the Blues in the summer – so could he be persuaded to jump ship?

Now 31-years-old, it seems likely this will be the last season he plays at Chelsea – if nothing else, due to Chelsea’s usual policy of offering players over the age of 30 one year contracts only. It’s a move that makes sense for Spurs too as they’re in need of some cover in attack now that they’re to be without Harry Kane for an extended period of time.

As mentioned above, Willian nearly moved to Tottenham back in 2013 when he signed for Chelsea. It was reported he even went as far as to complete a medical with Spurs at their training ground, but insisted Chelsea was “always” his first option and he would only have moved to Tottenham if a deal with Chelsea had fallen through.

So far this season, the Brazilian winger has managed five goals and five assist in 26 appearances across all competitions. Spurs saw Willian at his best just a few weeks ago when he and Chelsea went to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and picked up an impressive 2-0 win, in which the veteran winger bagged both goals.

Willian to Tottenham surely not gonna happen

Jose Mourinho reportedly sees Willian as the man who can bring some much needed depth to Tottenham’s front line. The arrival of the Brazilian would allow one of either Son or Lucas Moura to play centrally, while he filled in for them on the wing. If it were to happen, it would likely be Willian’s compatriot Lucas who moves central, given the success he had there towards the end of last season.

I’m not so sure Willian will be overly keen on the move happening in this window, especially given the fact he’s been in good form and playing a lot for Frank Lampard’s side of late. If I were him, I’d prefer to let my contract run down and make the move for free at the end of the season – but Spurs may decide it isn’t the right move for them then, given the point of the move would be to fill in for Harry Kane and add some depth.

At the end of the day, not many managers know Willian and the impact he can have on a side better than Jose Mourinho does – let’s not forget the Portuguese was the man who signed him for Chelsea back in 2013. If nothing else for Tottenham, this move will save them a headache or two twice a season. So far in his career, Willian has played 18 times and has been on the losing side just five times – scoring four times and assisting two in that time.
