Newcastle United and two other teams teams tracking 24-year-old striker

According to HITC, Newcastle United are one of three Premier League teams tracking 24-year-old striker Alexander Sorloth. The Norwegian is currently on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor from Crystal Palace – his form this season has attracted interest from the Tyneside club, as well as Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

How has he done this season?

Sorloth has really found his form in front of goal this season following a pretty barren spell at Crystal Palace. In London last season, Sorloth was expected to be the resolution to Palace’s Christian Benteke shaped striker issue – but it didn’t quite turn out that way.

In his 20 appearances for the club, he scored one goal and registered one assist with both coming in the EFL Cup. In 12 appearances in the Premier League he failed to register a goal or an assist and as a result was shipped out to Genk on loan in January where he would have slightly better form, scoring five times in 22 games.

This season, he was loaned out again, this time to Turkish Super Lig team Trabzonspor. In the league, he has bagged 19 goals in and six assists in his 23 appearances.

In all competitions, Sorloth boasts 24 goals in 35 appearances – outscoring his strike partner Daniel Sturridge who today was handed a worldwide football until June for breaching FA Gambling regulations.

Would he fit the bill at Newcastle United?

Yes he did indeed struggle last time he was in the Premier League, but I think he has all the attributes and traits Newcastle are missing this season. He can finish, he can hold the ball up, he can win headers constantly AND, unlike Joelinton, he is actually an out-and-out, natural goalscorer, number nine striker.

Newcastle have had their issues in front of goal this season as their £40m striker Joelinton has managed to find the net just three times all season – only one of which came in the Premier League.

Currently, Steve Bruce’s side are going through a tough time in front of goal in the league and haven’t scored a single goal for four straight games. In fact, the last goal they scored was Florian Lejeune’s last minute equaliser at Goodison Park back on January 21.

Between Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle – Newcastle have just one Premier League goal all season long. Ergo, a new striker is an absolute must this summer and I do believe Sorloth could be a genuinely decent option. He scores goals, Newcastle don’t – what more do you need to know?

As for Aston Villa and Sheffield United, it’d be a little bit tougher. Villa have just bought a new striker in Aly Mbwana Samatta who scored in the Carabao Cup final yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United have not struggled to score goals this season with the likes of Lys Mousset, Oli McBurnie and Billy Sharp all sharing the goal-scoring responsibility at Bramall Lane throughout their impressive campaign this year.

Sorloth, whom Trabzonspor reportedly have an option to buy this summer, has spoken out on the speculation linking him with a move back to the Premier League.

“I have seen the rumours, there are so many, I have read them and keep being sent information about teams that are interested,” explained Sorloth.

“However, I am only focused on Trabzonspor, there is a great team spirit here and we want to win the double. It would be irresponsible and wrong to disrespectful to talk about transfers at this time.”

For me, and this isn’t just because I may or may not be a fan of the club, Sorloth should most definitely opt for Newcastle if given the option this summer.
