Manchester United one of 3 Top Premier League sides battling to sign Norwich star

According to the Express, Manchester United are one of three Premier League clubs in a race to sign Norwich City star Todd Cantwell. The youngster has really impressed in the Premier League this season but with Norwich set for a return to the Championship, a number of top clubs are sniffing around.

Todd Cantwell and his season so far

The 22-year-old Englishman has, as mentioned above, impressed in a very poor team this season. Norwich currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League and have scored just 25 goals all season – that’s the second worst record in the division.

As an attacking player in a system that doesn’t score many goals, it can be hard to stand out and make people take notice – but Cantwell has managed to do just that. All-in-all, Cantwell has bagged six goals and two assists in his 28 Premier League appearances this season.

Cantwell has played at least some part in every Premier League game so far this season. In the league, no Norwich City player has made more appearances than the youngster this season. Of his 28 appearances, he has started 24 games and been subbed on in the other four.

Cantwell has spent his whole career so far at Norwich City having come through their youth ranks. In total, he has featured 58 times for the Canaries – bagging seven goals and four assists.

He did have a loan spell in January 2018 wherein he was shipped off to the Netherlands to join Fortuna Sittard for the rest of the 2017/18 season. In his time in Holland, Cantwell played 10 times Sittard, bagging two goals and three assists in total.

Manchester United linked, as are Spurs and Liverpool

Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for Cantwell this summer, but have competition from rivals Liverpool as well as Tottenham Hotspur. United have been linked for a while, but currently Liverpool are the favourites.

On Sky Bet, Liverpool are 7/4 to secure the signing of Cantwell. Manchester United are second on the list at 4/1 and currently, Sky Bet are not offering any odds at all on Cantwell joining Tottenham.

From the players perspective, he will be looking to make the step up to the top level of Premier League football, but he’s going to want to find a team wherein he will be able to get time on the field. At Liverpool, that seems rather unlikely.

To be perfectly honest, it seems as though Cantwell is going to have to spend some time on the bench no matter what if is he to join one of the top teams. Although he has impressed, I’m not sure he is ready to join a top six team and become a regular starter. He will have to spend some time on the bench – that’s a given.

In my personal opinion, Cantwell would be better off joining a slightly lower level Premier League team – i.e an Everton or an Arsenal. This way, he’d have far more opportunity to impress while still being getting the chance to show his abilities at the top level.
