Christian Eriksen linked with January move to Manchester United

We’re into December, which means that transfer rumours and speculation will run rife for the next two months. It comes as no surprise that one of the first players to be linked with a move away from their current club in January, is Christian Eriksen. The Dane has stated on multiple occasions that he is ready to move on from Spurs, when you combine that with the fact that he is now into the last six months of his contract, it is almost inevitable that he will be on the move next month.

There have already been a handful of different reports coming out over the last few days regarding potential moves for Eriksen, some stating that Spurs have reduced their asking price to around £40 million, which is half of their valuation for the player in the summer. It was hoped that the arrival of Jose Mourinho would sway the player into signing a new contract, however with Eriksen reiterating his desire to leave the club last week, it’s obvious that a new contract is not in the cards.

There have been multiple outlets linking the Danish playmaker with a move to Manchester United, after the Red Devils tried and failed to sign Erisken in the dying days of the summer window. It’s a player that United could certainly use at the moment, a player that could unlock their offence and take some of the burden off of the strikers and wingers. With the impending return of Paul Pogba, it would make for one hell of a midfield duo, with a more defensive minded player joining them to form a trio.

While Eriksen has stated that his preference is to leave England (and head to Madrid), he has also said that playing for a club like Manchester United ‘attracts’ him. It is thought that United are considering either ponying up and paying Spurs’ asking price, or trying to offer them another player, in a swap deal. It’s unclear currently exactly who they would be looking to include in such a deal, but details will continue to flow over the coming weeks.

One major issue for Manchester United and Spurs is that Erisken is free to sign a pre contract with an overseas club from the first of January, meaning his current club could lose their man for nothing and United could lose out on their target. If Real Madrid were to come calling with a contract for Eriksen, I would be incredibly surprised to see him turn it down.

It will be interesting to see how this situation continues to unfold, as yet another player has run down their contract in a bid to force a move elsewhere.
