Are Manchester City Back?

Manchester City reached the League Cup final last week, after beating local rivals Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford in the semi-final.

With 5 wins in their last 7 games, City is in seventh but are just four points off league leaders Liverpool. Crucially, they have two games in hand.

City missed out on the Premier League last season after two consecutive titles.

Making The Most Of Liverpool’s Struggles

Will it be Manchester City and Liverpool going for the Premier League title once again?

With City in form and the teams around them struggling of late, are Manchester City back?

Man City are now the bookies’ favourites. This can be put down to the form they are in but also down to the poor form of Liverpool.

The red half of Merseyside has been struck with injuries this season, with centre backs Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out for the rest of the season.

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has not played since October.

Jürgen Klopp’s side played two recognised midfielders at centre back in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho during the 1-0 loss to Southampton on Monday night.

Klopp has stated that he does not plan to get a centre back in January, which indicates a plan for the future rather than short term.

The Improvement In Manchester City’s Players This Season

This will benefit City, especially with Pep Guardiola looking to have found a reliable centre back in Rúben Dias and John Stones, the latter having a career resurgence, playing arguably the best football of his Man City career. This has caused Aymeric Laporte to be out of favour.

Rúben Dias and John Stones are enjoying a strong partnership.

Young English midfielder Phil Foden recorded a goal and assist in the 3-1 win over Chelsea and has seven goals in all competitions so far this season.

With David Silva back in Spain, Foden has taken on the role left by Silva.

Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne had his best game of the season against Chelsea. Both Man City and De Bruyne have improved as the season has gone on, which is crucial as the season continues. The Chelsea win certainly put a statement out to the rest of the league.

Sergio Agüero appears to be showing his age this season, with no goals in five Premier League appearances. This is seemingly going to be his last season at the club. Gabriel Jesus will need to step up but so far has not done so in Agüero’s absence, with just two league goals in 7 Premier League appearances.

Can Gabriel Jesus stand up and deliver?

Manchester City will need to look at strikers in the summer transfer window but have attackers Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling in the wide positions to give them a goal threat.

Loan signing Ferran Torres has performed better in the Champions League than the Premier League but is a good attacking option for the blue half of Manchester to have.

City have been playing good football and are looking as good as they have done in some time.

City has the advantage of no-one playing well around them and this can help them put a run together as they will hope to get their title back.

You would not have thought it when they lost 5-2 at home to Leicester City earlier this season but Manchester City are back playing how they should be and they should be considered the team to beat.
