This week, the Terriers parted ways with their manager as David Wagner mutually agreed to terminate his contract. Since then they have been linked with a whole host of managers, including Sam Allardyce, who has since ruled himself out of taking the reigns. Under-23 boss Mark Hudson has taken temporary charge.
Why are managers distancing themselves from the Terriers?
Even though Huddersfield are a great club with a loyal and dedicated fanbase, they currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League – unfortunately, it’s very difficult to see that changing any time soon. They’ve scored 13 times in the league this season, conceded 37 and amassed just 11 points.
Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports News “I don’t think I can change that situation. Huddersfield haven’t got enough goals to get out of trouble – That has been the one failing.
“No club has got out of such trouble after so few points after this many games. For me, and I know the fans won’t want to hear this, it’s got to be about planning for relegation and then planning to get back into the Premier League.”
Town should be looking toward the Championship
We may still have 16 games left this season, but when you consider that no team has ever stayed up with as few points as Town have at this stage in the season, maybe it’s time to accept the inevitable.
The fact is, there are some very astute Championship managers available at the moment – that’s the only place Huddersfield should be looking. Gary Rowett, Aitor Karanka and Slavisa Jokanovic are all recently out of job, and I believe any of the above would do a fine job in West Yorkshire.
The goal for Town next season is going to be promotion, and as a relegated team, they will be expected to be in and around the automatic promotion places come May. With that in mind, Aitor Karanka feels the natural choice for the job due to his experiences with Middlesbrough who were in a similar situation during his tenure there.
Slavisa Jokanovic would also be a very good option following his time at Fulham. He did a very similar thing with Fulham last season to what David Wagner did with Huddersfield in 2016/17. With his style of football and promotion experience, he could fit in very well with the Terriers.
Who are the favourites for Terriers job?
The current favourite for the managers hot seat is Borussia Dortmund Under-23 boss, Jan Siewert. Sky Bet currently have him sat at 2/5 favourite for the job with Aitor Karanka at 12/1 and Slavisa Jokanovic at 18/1.
