Chelsea set to match release clause of German star

According to reports in the papers this morning Chelsea are considering triggering the release clause of RB Leipzig star Timo Werner, however it is thought that if the club were to make an approach for the German there is a strong chance he would turn down the move.

Chelsea aren’t the first team to show interest in Werner over the course of the past 12 months with Liverpool making an approach for him in the summer transfer window, the striker turned down the move as he is not willing to accept anything other than first team football – a key issue that could arise in a potential move to Chelsea as Tammy Abraham has secured the spot as Lampard’s starting striker.

If Chelsea were to promise Werner regular first team football they can bring him to the club for just over £40 million, triggering the release clause that was inserted into his new contract with Leipzig signed in the summer. Any deal could go on to cause issues with Tammy Abraham however, as it is currently reported that the Englishman is holding out on signing a new contract until he understands what the striker situation at the club will be.

Chelsea to splash the cash

Chelsea target Timo Werner

Chelsea seem set on bringing in a second striker to provide some competition for Abraham, despite the presence of veteran French forward Olivier Giroud (who is currently angling for a move away from the club due to a lack of gametime). A number of pundits and experts have spoken out and warned Lampard against making such a move, concerned that it may upset the applecart and begin causing issues with the development of Abraham. Darren Bent would weigh in with his opinion.

“Don’t go and get a centre-forward for £60m because that’s going to upset Tammy and that applecart and I don’t like to see that happen because Tammy’s going really, really well at the minute.

“He’s comfortable in what he’s doing, he’s playing really, really well. He’s got a bit of pressure on him because obviously [Frank] Lampard’s made him the main man and you don’t need to go and sign someone like Werner.”

It cannot be argued that Werner would be a fantastic addition for Chelsea, the German star has currently tallied 18 goals in just 17 appearances in the league for Leipzig this season, with a total of 24 goals in 25 appearances. The man can find the back of the net, this much is not disputed, what Chelsea have to decide is whether or not they’re willing to upset Abraham by bringing Werner in with the promise of first team football.
