Sweden beat Chile in harsh Rennes weather

Sweden dominated from the off as they beat a poor Chile side by two goals to nil in a very wet Rennes. The game was delayed for over half an hour when thunder and lightning struck in the second half.

The first half settled into a rhythm pretty quickly in this game as Chile sat deep and allowed Sweden to play in front of them. In the first half, Sweden struggled to create many big chances and the chances they did create, they couldn’t get past PSG goalkeeper Christiane Endler. The PSG stopper made some top notch saves at crucial periods of the game and looked to be unbeatable.

In the second half, the game continued in much the same vein. That was until the 71st minute when the heavens opened and the thunderstorms reared their ugly heads. The referee, Lucila Venegas Montes, made the correct decision in taking the players off the field.

Sweden comfortable in downpour

The players eventually came back out half an hour or so later to finish the match. In that final 20 minute period, Sweden eventually made all their hard work and pressure pay when Kosovare Asllani found herself one-on-one with the keeper inside the box – she wasn’t going to miss. 1-0.

In stoppage time, Madelen Janogy wrapped it up for Peter Gerhardsson’s team as she skipped past a couple of players before finding the top corner with her left boot. Game over, points sealed for the Swedes.

It was a decent game all-in-all and despite the rain delay, was very enjoyable. Sweden need to learn to be better in front of goal and Chile will want to offer more of an attacking threat in the coming games.
